What is the difference between a Himalayan and a Persian - or are they similar beneath those gorgeous coats??

I breed both Himalayans and Persians.  The Himalayan breed was first seen in England as the result of accidental matings (known as Mother Nature),  and then deliberately created by breeding a Siamese and a Persian together.*  Therefore, all Himalayan pedigrees have a Siamese back at the very beginning and continue to have Persian bred into their lines going forward.  The Himalayan breed is and always has been a "mixed breed", so to speak.  In past years CFA decided to include the Himalayan as part of the Persian breed.  Today, Himalayans are registered as Himalayan-Persians and registered as the color-point division of the Persian breed.

There are three categories of  Persians:  pure Persians with no Himalayan ancestors, color-point carrier Persians that look like a pure Persian but carry  the color-point gene, and Himalayans which always carry both color-point and  Persian genetics. There is no such cat as a "pure" Himalayan, just by the very nature of its creation.  Both Himalayans and Persians have long held top  spots in popularity due to their beauty and wonderful dispositions.  For more information on both Himalayans and Persians, visit www.cfa.org.  You will find Himalayans  listed under the Persian category

The CFA Persian Breed Council Secretary's position is "there is absolutely no such thing as a "pure blooded Himalayan...First off all, there is no such thing as a "pureblood" cat - Persian or otherwise. This is why CFA is a registry of "pedigreed" not "purebred" cats"  And she shared and gave me permission to use excerpts from an article on the subject written by a past CFA President, Richard H. Gebhardt:

Effective February 20, 1984, the Cat Fanciers' Association (CFA) combined the Himalayan breed with the Persian breed as a color division...Once we opened the door, we began to see substantial Himalayan classes, and the breed improved. Breeding Himalayan to Himalayan, generation after generation, resulted in poor type and sparse coat.... We began to see why Virginia Cobb stated that the "Himalayan should be recognized as a color of the longhair; otherwise in a short time the Himalayan will have the long nose and slanted eyes, etc., of a Siamese."...Today, there is no question in my mind that the Himalayan is indeed a Persian. Only color and point-restricted pattern were introduced. Himalayans have enjoyed incredible success...
